Shootings in 5th District
It is unusual for me to get a call from the LBPD that a shooting has occurred in the 5th District. But several did happen last night at the Lakewood Masonic Lodge Hall near Heartwell Park.
A group of teens had a dance. It got out of hand and 4 were shot. Two died. Over a […]
Tree Lightings Successful and Fun…
Despite a threat of rain and cold winds, the tree lighting at Heartwell Park went off without a hitch.
More than 135 parents and children came bundled up to see the trees in the pond be lit and to watch several movies on the grass. Some inventive families brought outdoor portable heaters.
Santa arrived and many families […]
Get Out of My Parks!
I have a message for all the people (and they seemed to be all men) who are parking at all hours of the day and night in the parking lots and on the streets near El Dorado and Heartwell parks! The residents in the area have complained enough about some of the inappropriate activity that […]
1,000 Served: Good Neighbor Festival and Picnic a Great Success
If you count the number of hot dogs and hamburgers cooked and given out yesterday, 1,000 people attended the first Annual Good Neighbor Festival and Picnic at El Dorado Park near the Senior Center. (Thanks to the Long Beach Police Officers Association for cooking hamburgers — and then going to get more when they ran […]
Raising Money for Non-Profits
This coming Sunday, I am hosting a Good Neighbor Festival and Picnic. The goal was to bring together neighborhood organizations in the 5th Council District and to honor youths, adults and organizations who have been exceptionally good neighbors this past year.
Another important goal was to raise money for several non-profits by asking businesses and corporations […]
Good Neighbor Festival and Picnic
September is Good Neighbor Month and what better way to celebrate it than to have a Festival and Picnic on Sunday September 23 at 10 am until 4 pm. The event is being held in front of the El Dorado Senior Center at 2800 Studebaker in Long Beach.
We will have the Elm Street Band, hot […]
Algae at Duck Pond
No, this isn’t the title of a “spagetti western” it is the unfortunate announcement that a large number of fish died at the El Dorado Duck pond last week due to an extremely significant algae bloom that absorbed much of the oxygen in the pond. The algae bloom was noticed and last Friday and the Duck […]
A Visit to the Other Rosie the Riveter Park in Richmond
It took some navigating but I found the other Rosie the Riveter Park in Richmond, which used to be the site of the Kaiser Shipyards during World War II.
Funny how things look bigger on the internet. But I was expecting a huge park — which has received National Park designation. Instead, I found a park […]
Donelon Letter Misleading
Former 7th District Councilmember Mike Donelon’s letter to the editor on Sunday on the recommendations of the 5th District Youth Council concerning the El Dorado Skate Park is misleading and does a great injustice to the boys and girls who spent time conducting a public hearing on the issues that were raised about the skate […]
Fore…
Homeowners who live adjacent to the golf course at Studebaker and Stearns were concerned about the recent tree trimming done by Southern California Edison on its easement. (An easement is a legal title to access land, usually given to a utility. The easement contains transformers and other equipment necessary to bring electricity to our city.) […]
