Court Says Gay Marriage Legal in California
My email inbox is full. My voice mail system is too. The word came down at 10 am this morning that the California Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the state cannot prevent same sex couples from legally marrying.
This is an important civil rights victory! Whenever government takes away rights from anyone for any reason, it is dangerous and it is wrong. When those rights are restored then it is a good thing for everyone, including those who didn’t have their rights denied.
I didn’t work on this issue — much to the dismay of many of my friends in the gay and lesbian community — but I want to thank those who did for their hard work and for having the courage to stand up when it looked that it wasn’t going to happen and they went on and on. Raising money. Raising consciousness. Raising hell!
The court’s announcement could not have been better timed for Long Beach. Tomorrow starts the Gay Pride Celebration — with a theme this year so very appropriate: “I am what I am.”
