Community Baby Shower a Success

Thanks to a list of people and organizations that I will acknowledge on Tuesday at City Council — the Community Baby Shower was a success.

90 newborn kits were assembled by volunteers who completed the task in 1 hour — filling diaper bags with diapers, hand made blankets and booties, baby clothes, baby wipes (we had lots of those), pacifiers, socks and health care information for the moms.

Afterwards, the volunteers had some “Baby shower cake” (without having to play any of those games usually played at baby showers).

The newborn kits will be used by the Public Health Nurses at the City’s Health Department as incentives for pregnant moms to complete health care classes.

As I sorted through the baby clothes it reminded me how small my kids were at one time and how now that they are in their 20’s I can’t believe how fast the time has gone.

Special thanks again to my staff — especially Tiffany Andrews who helped coordinate the collection of all the donated items and money contributions that were sent to Long Beach Cares.

Kudos to the Public Health Nurses who care for these pregnant women. Prenatal programs reduce infant mortality and reduce the cost to the taxpayer because babies whose mothers received prenatal care usually don’t wind up in super expensive neonatal intensive care.
