Merry Christmas and New Year’s Predictions
By Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske | December 25, 2007
For all of you who celebrate Christmas, have a Merry Christmas. To others, have a peaceful holiday time. As I write this, I look out my home office window at the El Dorado Park and Library. The weather is perfect. The view is spectacular. I am very grateful.
New Year’s brings promise and predictions.
I predict:
- All the incumbents on the Long Beach City Council will be re-elected easily. Most will not even have a challenger.
- The voters will turn down extending term limits for Assembly and Senate and other state offices. Unfortunately this will mean two excellent members of the Long Beach City Council — Bonnie Lowenthal and Tonia Urganga will slug it out for the Democratic nomination for the 54th Assembly District. One will win — but at the expense of being rivalaries for the next 6 months — and then we will have yet another special election to fill their seats for the remaining two years.
- The Council will officially rename “Robert’s Rules” in honor of the Mayor and call them “Bob’s Regs.”
- The City budget will continue at a deficit which will bring the council to decide where to cut services again — because the votes aren’t there for tax increases and there aren’t enough votes to allow casino style gambling in Long Beach.
- A Democrat will be elected President. Not sure which one at this point — but frankly they all look much better than the incumbent and any of the GOP challengers.
- The State will not see “universal health care” because the proposed plans are too political and too much of a pay off to the insurance companies. (Let’s see…set up a mandated funded program to require people to buy health insurance from companies who wouldn’t sell it to them because they had a preexisting condition…but make sure you reward those health insurance companies who can now charge higher premiums under the state plan…)
- This country will still be at war in Iraq because we have ourselves in a mess and we don’t have the leadership to figure out how to get out of there.
- Gasoline will hit $5.00 a gallon after the presidential election.
- Certain California Mayors will announce their runs for Governor and Lt. Governor.
- Councilmember Gary DeLong will not be recalled nor will school board member, Mike Ellis.
- LBPOST.com will get a business license.
- Bill Pearl of LBReport.com will still scoop local media on most stories.
