Tree Lightings Successful and Fun…

Despite a threat of rain and cold winds, the tree lighting at Heartwell Park went off without a hitch.

More than 135 parents and children came bundled up to see the trees in the pond be lit and to watch several movies on the grass. Some inventive families brought outdoor portable heaters.

Santa arrived and many families generously brought unwrapped gifts for the LB Firefighters “Spark of Love” project.

Popcorn, candy canes, cookies and hot apple cider made the cold weather bearable.

My thanks again to the 5th District staff, the staff and volunteers of the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department and the staff from the LB Airport who came with a display and the wonderful cider.

(Kudos to Park staff who cleverly decorated an antique soap dispenser as a “remote lighting device” that once the lever was depressed allowed the children and Santa to turn on the lights in the pond.)

The next night, we repeated the process at El Dorado Park in front of the Senior Community Center where children from Patrick Henry Elementary and Westerly placed homemade decorations on a fresh, living pine tree that was donated by British Petroleum and will be planted at the park after the holidays.

The weather was better at El Dorado and we had more than 65 in attendance.

Thanks again to all the City staff and volunteers who helped made the events very successful.
