Let’s keep the discussion civil about big box

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

As a result of the clever mass mailing and phoning efforts of Walmart in the last couple of weeks I have been bombarded with emails and phone messages.
Most of the emails and calls are polite. But some are darn right nasty.
Attacking government and those who serve in it either as elected officials or public employees […]

Stop Sensationalizing Halloween

Monday, October 29th, 2007

It is upsetting to keep reading articles in the press about what might happen this coming Halloween in Bixby Knolls.
The Los Angeles Times especially should be ashamed. It rarely if ever covers Long Beach. But you got it. They wrote and published an article about the 1 year anniversary of the event.
Was it a horrible […]

University by the Sea a Great Success

Monday, October 29th, 2007

It was fun to see so many people downtown on Sunday during the University by the Sea event.
I remember going through the Jergins tunnel when I was a kid. The thing I remember the most is the floor.
My session — How Rosie the Riveter Came to Long Beach — was sold out and to my […]

I am astounded to find out that my presentation at the first University by the Sea this coming Sunday is sold out!
I am scheduled to present “How Rosie the Riveter Came to Long Beach” this Sunday at 4:30 pm at the Rockbottom Restaurant on Ocean Blvd — and all the tickets have been sold.
We will […]

Spending Money on Thwarting Democracy

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Well, another mailer was sent out by Walmart to elderly voters in the 5th District telling them to call me and tell me not to take away consumer choice by spending $500,000 to put an ordinance on the February ballot.
They are absolutely right! The voters of Long Beach should decide whether or not we should […]

Being Fair to Developers and Homeowners — It’s the Law

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

My staff received a very interesting but disappointing phone call today from a resident of Lakewood Village who expressed upset because I had tried to present a fair and balanced position concerning potential development at Parkview area off of Carson Avenue.
The resident expressed an opinion that I must be in the pocket of the developer […]

Get Out of My Parks!

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

I have a message for all the people (and they seemed to be all men) who are parking at all hours of the day and night in the parking lots and on the streets near El Dorado and Heartwell parks! The residents in the area have complained enough about some of the inappropriate activity that […]

Flash! We Don’t Get Sales Tax on Groceries!

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

The opponents of the ordinance, passed by the City Council and signed into law by the Mayor, which would ban the building of mega stores which sell groceries is being spun as evil, anti-business, and potentially keeping Long Beach from reaping millions in sales tax.
First of all, the ordinance, which again I remind you was […]

Gee, why do you think you got the mail?

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Came home from staying with my partner before and after her knee surgery…ouch. Hope I never have to get my legs taken apart and put back together with an artificial knee..Looked through my mail and tore open the little gem of a letter and survey from Concerned whomever asking you and me if we want […]
