About Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2006 to a four-year term of office. The 5th Council District is the largest council district in the City comprising more than 11.5 square miles. It is the largest because it has the least density of homes, apartments and/or condominiums. Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske is the only member of the Long Beach City Council to utilize a blog. Lakewood Plaza and Long Beach

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

When I first got my checks for my checking account at Bank America more than 20 years ago, I thought something was wrong. The address of the branch at Palo Verde and Spring was headed by “Lakewood Plaza Branch.”
Something must be wrong, I thought. We are squarely in Long Beach.
Well, in doing some historical research […]

New Approach to Council District Awards

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I am taking a new approach to giving awards from the 5th Council District. Each council member has a specific month of the year and presents at council awards and recognition for residents and others who have positively contributed to the betterment of the council district.
This process takes upwards of an hour at City Council.
The […]

How Another City Used Its Shipyards — and Are We Watching San Pedro?

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

While in Richmond, I drove through the Marina area which is now full of green space, light industrial, retail and hundreds of beautiful condos.According to one source: “The former Richmond Shipyards were transformed starting in the late 1980s into a multiunit residential area, Marina Bay. Starting in the early 2000s, the city began an aggressive […]

A Visit to the Other Rosie the Riveter Park in Richmond

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

It took some navigating but I found the other Rosie the Riveter Park in Richmond, which used to be the site of the Kaiser Shipyards during World War II.
Funny how things look bigger on the internet. But I was expecting a huge park — which has received National Park designation. Instead, I found a park […]

City Still Searching on Wi-Fi Network

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Last year, the City put out a request for proposal to find a vendor to develop and implement a wi-fi (wireless fidelity) system to provide city-wide access to the internet.
The City has a problem. Such as system requires a constant source of electricity to its city streetlights. Apparently we do not have a constant source […]

The Port of Long Beach Isn’t A Bakery, Mr. Chertoff!

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has got to make up his mind. Just a few weeks ago he announced as if coming out of a psychic trance: “I have a gut feeling that is a summer of increased risk.” Meaning: the US should expect terrorist attacks of some sort this summer.
Weeks later, he comes to the […]

Time to Place RV Parking Issue on Ballot

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Since last November, I have been trying to get the City to move forward to deal with the growing problem of RV and oversized vehicle parking on our residential streets. Despite having two public hearings on this issue through joint hearings of the Transportation and Infrastructure and Housing and Neighborhoods Committees of the City Council, […]
