About Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2006 to a four-year term of office. The 5th Council District is the largest council district in the City comprising more than 11.5 square miles. It is the largest because it has the least density of homes, apartments and/or condominiums. Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske is the only member of the Long Beach City Council to utilize a blog. She hopes that you will keep reading it as she writes about her experiences in local government.

Why We Went to DC

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Having just received a nasty blast from a participant of thisland as to why was the Federal Legislative Committee went to the federal capitol, meeting with federal officials on federal matters, I will write what I wrote him.
The City Council has a Federal Legislative Committee (and a State Legislative Commitee) and many other standing committees […]

What We Discussed in DC

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

The trip to Washington, DC as part of the Council Standing Committee on Federal Legislation felt a little like “speed dating” with the federal branch of government. At break neck speed, the three councilmembers (DeLong, Gabelich, me) and the City’s Government Affairs Manager, Tom Modica, met with the following:

Ada Benebides, Deputy Chief, South Pacific Division; […]

Sleepless in DC

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Had a heck of a time going to sleep and staying asleep last nite after we finally got settled at the Washington Hilton. The hotel was sold out but they accommodated us in “parlor suites” and cut the price in 1/2 because the rooms didn’t have beds — we all had to order roll aways. […]

80 in DC Today

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

It’s predicted to be 80 degrees today in Washington, DC and a pollen count of 2900! The cherry blossoms are in bloom and lots of other plants and flowers. Spring is here.
We arrived on time last night, only to wait over 35 minutes to get our bags and then faced an overbooked hotel.
Today, the three […]

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

I leave tomorrow morning with Councilmembers Gabelich and DeLong for Washington, D.C. I have to fess up: I hate flying but love DC having lived there before for about 7 years.
The three of us will be go to Washington, D.C. to meet and talk with members of the House and Senate concerning Long Beach’s federal […]

Put the tax back on marine bunker fuel to help the environment

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Okay. It sounds “wonky” and probably few readers even know what in the world “marine bunker fuel” is and why it should no longer be exempted from the full “sales and use tax” or SUT, but here goes my explanation.
The south coast region of California is starting to finally wake up about the devastation that […]

Staying Out of the 6th Council District

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I am staying out of the 6th Council District race. It’s not that I couldn’t support any of the candidates running to fill the unexpired term of now Assemblywoman Laura Richardson, it’s just that I feel I have no business telling the voters of the 6th District whom they should support.
And there is that pesky […]

Increase in Forcible Rape Not Acceptable

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Our local press touted the good news that recent stats from the LB Police Department indicate that generally crime is down in Long Beach. That is excellent news. Crime is down generally across the nation.
The bad news is that sexual assault/rape is up a whopping 28.8% in Long Beach. Sadly, the press brushed this off by […]

Gotta Brag

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I am a proud mom. Today my son and a friend of his received a “community service” award from the Long Beach Fire Department for getting residents in their condo complex to get out during a fire at the complex.
My son, David, is 25 and the kinda guy you’d want not only as your son, […]

US Library of Congress Features LB Douglas Plant “Rosie’s”

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Of all the things I have initiated since getting elected to City Council, nothing has met with more enthusiasm than the announcement of the naming of a park in honor of the women who worked at the defense plants during World War II.
Because Boeing has named its new area project: Douglas Park, and a small park […]
