Winter Turf Freeze

Yeah, the grass is an ugly brown around many of our parks and golf courses.

Here’s the official response from the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department:

In January, the area had several days in a row of very low and freezing temperatures. Because of this winter weather condition, many areas of turf in the parks, particularly ones with sub-tropical turf species, such as Bermuda grass, turn instantly brown with the cold temperatures. These grasses will green again as soon as the weather warms sufficiently. The cold temperatures also affected many varieties of plant materials. Most often, this results in tips or portions of the plants turning brown or mushy. In some cases, the entire plant is affected. While the tendency would be to immediately trim the effected portions from the plants, this in fact can prove detrimental. It is best to leave those portions until the weather warms sufficiently and new growth is appearing before trimming is done.

We do need to keep in perspective that Long Beach and especially the 5th Council District had an abundance of parks and golf courses.
