About Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2006 to a four-year term of office. The 5th Council District is the largest council district in the City comprising more than 11.5 square miles. It is the largest because it has the least density of homes, apartments and/or condominiums. Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske is the only member of the Long Beach City Council to utilize a blog. She hopes that you will keep reading it as she writes about her experiences in local government.

Who’s Got the Power?

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Since taking office last July, the electrical power in the 5th District has gone down in major parts of the district at least 5 times that I know about. Today, the electrical power went down in City Hall causing all City employees to be evacuated.
What is disheartening is finding out that we can’t find out […]

Library Hours Still Not Restored in the 5th District

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

5th District library patrons are anxious to have the operating hours of the two branch libraries — El Dorado and Bach — brought back to pre-budget cuts.
Council has just received a notice from Library Services that six libraries will be open an additional day beginning February 3 and four more libraries plan to be open […]

Let’s Get It Right About the Oil Tax

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Yes, I voted against putting an oil tax increase on the special election ballot on several grounds: 1)we shouldn’t be spending $1 million plus to conduct a special election; 2) we haven’t even looked at the budget for this coming year to see where we can further cut; 3) we have not determined that this […]

Give Gaeblich an “A” For Effort — LBUSD an “F”

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Councilwoman Rae Gaeblich (and the City staff that helped) should be given an “A” for effort in planning and executing the community resource fair that was held in Grace Brethern Church yesterday near Bixby Knolls.
Rae has taken quite a few hits over the Bixby Knolls incident and I personally commend her for stepping up and […]

Schipske Moves Blog

Many people have asked for a feature that allows them to search my blog for a specific topic. Blogspot (which hosts this blog) does not have that feature, so I have switched over to a regular Word Press/Yahoo site that allows that feature.
If you are receiving this blog because you subscribed, please switch over to […]

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Last evening, thirty residents of the El Dorado Park Estates attended the last in a series of meetings at Newcomb Academy to discuss the on-going problem of water seeping into the lowest level in the tri-level “201″ model homes.
A panel of individuals with background in real estate, home inspection and foundation repair discussed the various […]

Exciting Pilot Project to Fix Sidewalks in 5th District

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

People often question the value of elected officials going to conferences. So when I went off to my first conference a few months ago in San Diego for the League of California Cities, I actually did go to the sessions and spent a considerable time talking and listening to the vendor who brought their wares […]

Vote Against Special Election

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Trust provides three basic things in the lives of people: It makes social life predictable, it creates a sense of community, and it makes it easier for people to work together.
Trusting the decisions of elected officials is something our residents do not do lightly.
And that is why I fear that we are on a […]

Friends of Veterans

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

After a visit to the Villages at Cabrillo and a tour of the services provided to our homeless veterans, I was hooked and asked to join the Advisory Board.
The Villages at Cabrillo — which on the site of the old Navy housing on the Westside of Long Beach — opened up 6 years ago and […]

Zoning and Child Care Facilities

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Some people were puzzled by my requesting the Council to reconsider an item we had previously discussed regarding a request for a conditional use permit by an applicant wanting to change the nature of her business from a family day care to a commercial day care operation.
I put the item on the agenda at the […]
