Monday, October 30th, 2006The City Council will be spending a great deal of time in the next 8 weeks reviewing suggestions to revise the City’s Charter in order to meet the statutory (which means “legal”) requirement that any charter changes to be placed on a ballot be prepared not less than 88 days prior to the election in […]
AARP Convention in Anaheim
Saturday, October 28th, 2006Yep. I confess. I go to the AARP — American Association of Retired Persons — Conventions. Was actually scheduled to go to the one in New Orleans and remember watching the news unfold about Katrina and seeing what happened to the convention center. The convention was cancelled.
This year it was in Anaheim and for a […]
5th District RV Parking Lot
Saturday, October 28th, 2006Driving through the 5th District — especially after dark — it is apparent that my proposal to get oversized and non-motorized vehicles (boats, trailers, etc) off the streets it sorely needed.
North of Spring Street, the neighborhoods are littered with oversized vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Trailers and boats — not attached to any type […]
Teaching Kids How to Pick Their NO’S
Friday, October 27th, 2006Am up early this am finishing preparing my talk I will give later today to the students at Cubberly Elementary on Monogram in my District. (Hope they have a power point projector.)
This is Red Ribbon Week and the principal asked me to come and speak to the kids about the importance of being drug and […]
Successful Community Meeting
Friday, October 27th, 2006Wednesday was a success. It was the first 5th District Infrastructure Advisory Committee. More than 135 people attended. The room was packed (and a little too warm until we found the air conditioning). Everyone in attendance currently has a specific infrastructure problem that needs fixing: streets, curbs, gutters, standing water, tree trimming, sidewalks…
I appreciated them […]
New Format
Wednesday, October 25th, 2006If you have been reading my blog you know that the format is different. That’s because I received complaints from readers that the other format (with wide columns and small type) was difficult to read.
I hope this style is easier. I certainly like it because it makes my photo smaller…
Cambodia Town
Wednesday, October 25th, 2006I voted to have further study done and to receive additional community input on the proposals to designate a part of Long Beach as “Cambodia Town.” I did so because as I listened to discussion last night before the City Council, I was struck by the fact that there is not consensus in the community […]
Jerry Miller’s Announced Departure
Sunday, October 22nd, 2006It was a candid comment — typical of the current City Manager, Jerry Miller. Candid. To the point.
Apparently when asked at a city management retreat last week about his future, Miller remarked that he would be leaving next summer. He also explained he had not discussed this with the City Council. Nevertheless, someone eager to […]
Constituent Calls — How Parking Laws Are Made
Friday, October 20th, 2006My council office receives dozens of phone calls and emails each day from residents of the 5th District. 98% of the calls are regarding infrastructure — sidewalks, trees, curbs, water in the streets and pot holes in the streets. The other calls are regarding traffic, crossing guards, parking, neighborhood nuisances.
The calls and emails are assigned […]
Building an office and a staff and shirts
Wednesday, October 18th, 2006Since July 18th when I took office, I have been trying to organize a staff for the downtown council office and the neighborhood office in El Dorado Park. Selecting a staff with the experience, education and commitment to local government was the easy part — there are many people able and willing to work the […]
